Impressionism II

Learn to paint with loose, expressive brushwork while defining light and shadows through the use of shapes combined with vibrant colours. Jacintha will guide you through exercises and teach valuable techniques in order to promote the understanding and experience of creating your very own impressionistic paintings of the world around us. Join her in your journey towards developing your own unmistakable style of painting, as you learn to use different tools and stencils to enhance your artwork.

Travel to beautiful places on Google Street View with artist Marjan Verstappen, and then paint them! Improve your skills at painting landscapes and streetscapes using the awesome power of the internet. This class is appropriate for any level of experience. 
Materials you will need:  watercolour paints, watercolour brushes, watercolour paper, painter's tape, ppray bottle, paper towel. Optional: Gummed tape, Mdf board for stretching watercolour paper.

Capturing colour on canvas in the world around us, participants will learn the techniques of creating Canadian landscapes in vivid acrylic colour. In this course, students will focus on stepping up their palette with unusual hues as they capture the significant changes of spring into summer. Paint and Process: Beyond Pollock is an active studio approach to a contemporary art practice. Celebrating its 20th year, this class offers intermediate and advanced level artists the opportunity to direct their artistic development and provides an opportunity to access professional coaching and mentoring. Each session begins with a 30-minute introduction where selected abstract and non-objective artists will be introduced, stimulating class discussions and individual reflections. Soft pastels are a versatile medium that have been used through the centuries by artists such as Carriera, Quentin de la Tour, Degas, Cassatt, Picasso and many others. They are portable, vibrant and easy to use. Through a variety of exercises, students will learn several different pastel techniques to create beautiful drawings. Subject matter for drawing will include drawing from Still Life and photo reference (supplied). We will cover colour theory, composition and design, personal style and expression, and the nitty gritty of what pastels and papers you need and where to find them. Using urban environment elements as inspiration such as overpasses, buildings, billboards and people, this course will allow the exploration of visual opportunities in shape, colour, contrast and perspective. Learn to draw the Golden Gate Bridge, the Parliament Buildings in London, England, elaborate cathedral architecture; but not in this class! We are drawing enjoyable subject matter: shells, fruit, plants, trees, faces (all the stuff that looks good, but is pretty easy, with a little help from your friends at Neilson Park!). Monoline Calligraphy Class Full

Learn to reconstruct two traditional calligraphy scripts and take your lettering and journaling to another level! Uncial, a script used between the 4th and 6th centuries, is a rounded alphabet consisting of only capital letters. Traditionally done with a broad-edged nib, we will be doing a modern monoline version of it. Versals are drawn letters used to begin verses of text. Letters will be presented in easy to follow stages and we will be exploring simple ways of decorating Versals. No calligraphy experience necessary. Materials list is available here.

Offering a different topic for each class, this course is for the beginner to the well-seasoned calligrapher! Each class focuses on a different aspect of calligraphy.

  • Classic and modern monograms. Learn layouts and design and make your own monogram.
  • An introduction to monoline calligraphy focusing on letter structure and composition.
  • Make your own ‘Cola Pen’ calligraphy tool and learn to letter with it.
  • Acanthus leaves are a design element in many calligraphy pieces. Learn to draw and create different compositions.
  • Create different borders with simple Islamic floral patterns
  • Improve your handwriting skills.
