Beyond Picasso with Steve Rose

Learn to paint in a free, expressive way. This popular course encourages students to take new creative paths in their work. Learn the difference between abstract and non-objective painting. Apply your knowledge of depth, shape, form and contrast to the exciting technique of non-objective painting to achieve a freer expression of style in all your work.

 

Critique! Open Studio with Steve Rose

Award winning instructor Steve Rose will share his insight and experience through the critique and analysis of students’ art. Bring in any works in progress or dust off those pieces you have given up on. Learn from the mistakes and successes of your peers while finding ways to introduce more of yourself into your work. This course is open to all levels, in any media or style you choose.

 

Artists’ Studio with Steve Rose

Designed for students with some experience, this course encourages you to continue developing your style and technique in a focused and supportive environment. Come work under the guidance of your instructor, who will be available to critique your work and shed new light on any part of the process. Compelling elements of art history and theory will also be introduced, enriching your knowledge and challenging you to think differently about creativity.

For beginners, seasoned artists in need of a shake-up and those in between, this course can be tailored to meet your needs and will keep you moving on your creative journey. Painting and drawing in a variety of media will be explored, with emphasis on strong compositions, value design, and colours that sing. Students are free to try any media (except oils, please). Satisfy both sides of the brain by thoughtfully designing your canvas without sacrificing spontaneity and life.

 

Exploring Printmaking with Victoria Cowan

• Tuesday mornings (8 weeks), 9:30 am –12:30 pm

This session students will explore collagraphy, a method that allows for much variation and playful experimentation. Printing plates are built up by gluing various materials to a mat board. Ink is wiped into the surface and it is then printed with a press. While suitable for beginners, participants at any level who would enjoy a refresher are welcome.

 

Simple Books and Pages with Victoria Cowan

• Tuesday mornings (4 weeks), 9:30 am –12:30 pm

Learn to create structures to explore sequential images in various formats—try accordions, altered books, or collage. Use your favourite media and methods. Keep it simple with cutting and pasting; as inspiration prompts you, add new techniques such as stamping, transfers, pop-ups, pockets, stitching, niches, and other embellishments. All levels welcome.

 

PICTURE THIS! Cartooning & Storyboarding, for Adults and Teens

Put your drawing and story-telling skills to work under the instruction of  accomplished graphic artist, Aaron Ong. Long before there can be action onscreen, the actors hired, or the cameras roll, the script must be pre-visualized by artists who draw scene-by-scene comic-style storyboards expressing the look and feel of the production. Progressing from rough sketches through to finished panels, students will learn to create these crucial artworks and how to maximize their visual impact. Get ready for some dramatic drawing!

 

Figurative Art, working from life, with Kim Lee Kho

By working with a model while making use of various approaches and media, students will use the human form to develop their artistic skills and scope. The class will explore a broad range of artistic issues, supported by weekly examination and discussion of figurative masterworks. Beginning with the foundation of drawing–central to the art of seeing as well as a simple, versatile medium for exploration–students will also work with acrylics, a bit of collage, and anything else that supports those ideas the class elects to pursue in more depth.

 

Figurative Art Studio, with Kim Lee Kho

• Wednesday afternoons, 1:00–4:00 pm

Primarily self-directed, this afternoon session offers the opportunity to continue the morning’s explorations with group discussions and plenty of personalized attention. Alternatively, you may simply join in and work on your own body of work from the figure, benefiting from the same one-on-one and group support. There will be an art history component, a variety of pose lengths, and the option for more structure/exercises if there is sufficient interest among participants.

 

Drawing Basics with John Wood

Would you love to learn to draw well? This course offers all the basics to enable you to accomplish wonderful results. Students will investigate drawing in a structured manner, with special emphasis on perspective. Topics and lessons are sure to excite your imagination and lead you to look twice at familiar environments.

 

Acrylics Unleashed! with Scott Cooper

• Wednesday evening; 6:30–9:30 pm

Acrylics are wonderfully versatile paints, suitable to many techniques. Splash them on paper like watercolour or smear them on canvas like oil, but they’re not really like either. Students will be encouraged to try different techniques, with a view to establishing a solid understanding of both the medium and the fundamentals of easel painting. If you want to begin painting, but don’t know where to start, look no further!

 

Composition and Colour with Kal Honey

• Thursday morning; 9:30 am–12:30 pm

Have you ever wondered why some paintings “work” better than others? Underpinning every successful piece of art is a successful application of composition: whether intentional, intuited, or by sheer luck. In this course you will learn to intentionally apply principles such as contrast, balance, symmetry, scale, tension, position, numbers and proportion. The basics of colour will be reviewed and applied in combination with elements of design to strengthen the impact and visual sophistication of your work. Composition and colour will be demystified through the discussion of masterworks old and new, applied exercises, and individual design critiques.

 

Creative Kick Start with Kal Honey

Is your groove starting to look a bit like a rut? Have you hit a plateau? Is your work feeling too much like, well, work? As visual artists, we all experience the ebb and flow of creativity, and need to periodically seek new approaches to keep our artistic practice vital. Put on your artistic sweats and spend the term in a new playground: through fun and challenging exercises, you’ll explore a myriad of fresh concepts and processes to reinvigorate your imagery and imagination. Bring an open mind, and come out and play! This course is open to all, but best suits artists with at least a few years of experience.

 

Drawing for Beginners with Helen McCusker

\Whether you’ve always wanted to learn how to draw, are looking to refresh your skills, or hope to express yourself through drawing, this is the class for you! We will use simple, effective exercises to build a solid foundation of drawing skills. A variety of media and techniques will be explored and individual attention given in a constructive environment. Students will learn to take an intuitive approach to drawing, sharpening their observation skills and finding an expressive style that is uniquely their own.

Galleries “walk and talk” with Kim Lee Kho

There’s a lot going on in the contemporary art scene, and how many of us get out to the galleries as often as we’d like? Spend a day touring the Queen West (and/or other downtown) galleries that specialize in leading-edge work. It will be a day sure to surprise, provoke and inspire! Regular breaks–and an affordable lunch–will be taken along the way, to rest your feet and digest what you’ve seen. Kim Lee Kho will act as your tour guide, injecting enthusiasm and thoughtful analysis, as well as providing some background and context to the work you’ll be viewing.

 

DRAWING

 

‘On–the-spot-sketching’ with John Wood

$100 for 4 sessions

 

Four Sunday afternoons, Sept 12, 19, 26 & Oct 3; 12:00 pm–3:30 pm

 

Come out and breathe new life into your work. Trees, gardens, buildings, and streetscapes are just some of the subjects that could be explored at different locations near Neilson Park. Having fun in an artistic way will be the name of the game! The first afternoon, students will meet and sketch on the grounds at Neilson Park; John will suggest promising sketching spots in the area, and the class will agree on future sites together. In case of inclement weather, studio space will always be available at the Centre.

 

‘The Grand Design’ with John Wood

Simply put, design is fundamental to every successful work of art. In this unique course, you will learn how to apply the elements and principles of design to make your work come alive. Join a dedicated group of people looking to produce more effective art. In addition to formal exercises and critique, the class will explore the impact that sound principles of design can have on one’s artwork.

 

PAINTING

Florals “Up Close and Personal” with Nancy Newman

In this all-day workshop, participants will create a large floral watercolour with an “up close” focus. Come and learn how to maximize the impact of your work in watercolour by focusing on shape, colour and contrasted values.

 

Watercolour for the Never-Held-A-Brush-Before Beginner with Scott Cooper

You want to be a painter, but you don’t know which medium to start with? Why not explore the magic of watercolour in this introductory workshop? At the end of the day, you’ll have a finished painting and many new ideas to take home.

 

Acrylics for the Never-Held-A-Brush-Before Beginner with Scott Cooper

An ideal introduction to the versatile medium of acrylics, this workshop presents the basics of the painting process, from initial composition, colour mixing and brush handling techniques, to a finished piece. Students will work in a style reminiscent of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, emulating their outdoor oil sketches of the Central Ontario landscape.

 

Seasonal Colours with Nancy Newman

Capture the vibrant colours of autumn and create a painting that glows with transparent warmth. Participants will increase their understanding of colour and learn how to employ a variety of techniques, including negative painting.

Come and challenge your brain to perceive objects in a different way. Participants will learn the basics of negative painting so they can add depth to their work for exciting new results.

“How can I get the most out of my point and shoot camera?” This workshop will introduce beginners to all that their point and shoot digital cameras have to offer. Get comfortable with the basic functions and settings, as well as some useful terminology (pixel, resolution, compression).  Materials: Point and shoot digital camera, memory card, instruction manual, fully charged battery, back up battery or battery charger.

 

Impressive Prints with Carol B. Jones

“I want to take better photographs!” Learn how to improve the composition of your photographs, explore the effects of outdoor lighting, and more! Bring in photos you’ve taken for helpful feedback. Materials: your digital camera, memory card, instruction manual, fully charged camera battery, back up battery or battery charger, 6 or 7 of your photographs.

 

QUILTING

 

Saturday workshops with Kim Maticiw—9:00am to 3:30pm

 

All quilting workshops are $40 each; take 3 or more and pay $35 each.

 

1. Flower Pounding Sept. 11

+$15 kit fee per student includes fabric & flowers

Add another dimension to your quilting skills. You’ll hammer flowers and foliage into treated muslin fabric to create your own design, which can then be added to a quilt, or made into a wall hanging, table runner, etc.This will makes a great keepsake for a bridal bouquet or to commemorate a special occasion. Bring your creativity and be prepared to have fun! No experience necessary.

 

2. Diamond scrap quilt Sept. 18

This quilt is so quick and easy to make! Five scraps of fabric, a few seams, one cut and you have two blocks. Select a color for your background–light or dark tones and a selection of light, medium and dark fabric scraps for the blocks. Theme fabrics work too! This class is suitable for beginners on up.

 

3. Introduction to Art Quilts Sept. 25

Students are led on a creative design journey. Colour, composition and fabric placement are discussed. Each student will create a one-of-a-kind quilt using fabric as embellishments. An all levels class. Just add Imagination.

 

4. Introduction to Curve Machine Piecing Oct. 2

Create this circular wall hanging by machine piecing. Movement is  created through fabric colours. It’s easier than you think! Some sewing experience is helpful.

 

5. Kimono & Fan Quilt Course Oct. 23

Pattern provided. This elegant Asian themed quilt will look beautiful hanging on display, or put out for use. The kimonos & fans are paper pieced and you will learn a sure method to judge how much fabric to use for each section. Adding tabs to your wall hanging will be discussed. All levels class.

 

6. Scrappy Pin the Tail on the Donkey Quilt Oct. 30

+$5 large pattern fee per student. This adorable quilt will delight any child and is a great way to use up scraps. Crazy quilting and machine appliqué.

 

7. Giant Flowers Nov. 6

Pattern Provided. Create a colorful art quilt wall hanging influenced by nature. Giant lily, pansy, poppy or amaryllis will be offered. All levels with some experience in machine appliqué.
