Lily Chen

This painting is based on a photo I took of my siblings on a play structure at night, on Halloween.

A specific technique I wanted to try was painting light colours on top of a darker dried colour, leaving only thin lines of the darker color. Essentially using negative space as emphasis lines. I had done this in a previous painting unintentionally and concluded that its appeal was due to the use of this technique.

I am not actively trying to convey any messages through my paintings, but there always is background information within them. In this one is how I enjoy nighttime as a time of day, and fall as a season. It is also a picture of something I do not have the chance to see often, a play structure at night. That makes it more interesting to me.
