Yuqian Sun is a young, award-winning independent artist whose practice spans both large-scale oil and watercolor paintings as well as intimate, small-format works.  Beyond her expansive canvases, she has a deep passion for creating realistic watercolor pieces that capture the quiet beauty found in everyday life.  With precise, sharp brushwork, she seeks to render not only the tangible but also the elusive—moments of light, the movement of water, and the subtle atmospheres that often escape notice.

Since 2024, Yuqian has been teaching a variety of watercolor-related courses at Neilson Park Creative Centre, where she shares her enthusiasm for observation and her carefully honed painting techniques with students of all levels.  She believes that art is not only about skill but also about seeing—cultivating the ability to notice fleeting harmonies of form, light, and color in the world around us.

This exhibition presents a collection of her recent small-scale works, each one reflecting her enduring fascination with the natural world.  From delicate botanical studies to detailed depictions of animals, Yuqian’s paintings reveal her curiosity about the forms, structures, and unique vitality of living things.  Her approach to watercolor embraces both the discipline required for realism and the unpredictability that makes the medium so distinctive.  Through layered washes, subtle color transitions, and the intentional use of watercolor’s spontaneous effects, she seeks to create images that transcend straightforward representation—offering viewers a vision of landscapes and subjects more luminous and poetic than what the eye alone can perceive.

Together, these works invite the audience to slow down, look closer, and discover the quiet moments of beauty that exist all around us, waiting to be seen.
