The Art of the Stencil with Kal Honey

Saturday Apr. 8 – Sunday Apr. 9, 2017

9:30am – 4:00pm

$145 member, $165 non-member (with HST: $163.85, $186.45)

Crisp edges, bold shapes, nuanced patterns, sharp letters! Repeat after me: This is insanely FUN! We'll take a brief look at how repetition and pattern have figured in the art of the last century before getting dug into the prosaics of cutting our own customized stencils from different kinds of materials, depending on your intended uses. Then, through both set and open-ended exercises, we’ll explore the myriad creative possibilities that stencils make possible: patterns, silhouettes, letters — once or a hundred times! Careful, precise alignments or free-form intuitive expressions: It’s all possible with stencils! $15 materials fee payable to the instructor. Material list available.

Colour Clinic: Why and How to Use Modified Colour with Kal Honey

$70 member, $80 non-member (with HST: $79.10, $90.40)

Deepen your colour understanding and expand your painter’s toolbox with this lively primer/refresher on modifying colours. As painters, we are inevitably drawn to the excitement of full-intensity colour, but too much of a good thing can leave our work looking more like candy and less like painting. In this workshop, we’ll learn about tints, tones and shades, colours created by mixing all three primaries, and mixed blacks. Then we’ll then practice using modified colours to create several different effects through hands-on exercises. Leave straight-out-of-the-tube behind and start mixing with the pros! Materials list available.

Who hasn’t rendered a landscape at some point in their art-making? From the anticipation of what new delight lies around the next bend to the intimate knowledge of the familiar, a keen sense of place is central to our nature as humans. Well-known or never-before-seen, real or imagined, fact or fiction -- place has an endless capacity to speak to us as artists: we must attempt to capture and express those qualities that we find so moving, intriguing, haunting.

Starting with exercises to get you thinking about the significance of place, as well as honing your observational skills, this course will expand into guided but self-directed exploration and development of personal work relating to the places that matter most to you as an artist.
