The Admirals Quarters

I was first attracted to this image because of the arrangement and rendering of the various graphic elements. Line, shape, form, space, and balance are all strong elements that I considered when composing the image combined with a presentation of purity of the blacks, whites, and various shades of grey in between. Finally, my intent at the time was to photographically complete a connection between the main subject, my visual audience, and myself. The theory that less is more in this case works. Vertical lines along with horizontal and diagonal ones add visual interest to the image.

Up The Down Staircase #2

As far back as I can remember I was interested in the various elements of design especially the dimensional artwork of Dutch artist and mathematician Escher. His artwork contained multiple layers and levels along with strong symmetry. I always enjoyed the triangular formats the most, especially when I isolated them. For years my photographic intent was to emulate his style and create a series of fine art images that were Escher-like. When composing my main subject I always included a
variety of visual elements of lines, shapes, and unique patterns that become predominant and demanded the viewer’s attention. This image was taken at the historical Museum of Contemporary Art.
