The Sun Peeks Through

I have always been intrigued by the challenge of non-objective painting. In this work, I began with mark-making on a white surface and then intuitively added colours and shapes. I then responded to the initial marks and shapes by adding, subtracting and altering the surface. Layers of paint and marks are added until a balance or cohesiveness is achieved.

I began this painting with intutitive mark-making on board. No advance planning was done except to pick an initial colour palette. I responded to the marks and added shapes, always looking for different shapes and value contrast. Paint is layered, added to, subtracted from and drawn into. Marks flux in and out of the surface; shapes emerge and disappear. The process continued until elements interact and balance is achieved.
