Truth Truth Truth Truth

This piece relates to a distorted family tree steeped in questions of reality. It reflects some of the women in my family, more importantly, my grandmother who kept her Jewish identity hidden for most of her life. The piece reflects on some of the questions and confusion and impact that happens as a result of trying to hide a massive secret and the shame she held. The piece also explores the special and understandable ways that mothers have tried to decrease the impact of pain on their own children by molding them into socially acceptable people who can ‘pass’, hiding as cultural ghosts. The tree connects women of multiple generations and at its roots is a group of dancing girls representing myself and my cousins and our own daughters and the hope that the weight of it all may be lifted.
