Sing! Etobicoke, Encore Returns to The Community

Neilson Park Creative Centre is pleased to announce funding from the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility’s Seniors’ Provincial Grant, enabling NPCC to offer a second iteration of its highly successful Sing! Etobicoke program.

The free program offers a series of twenty choral workshops with participants drawn from both Neilson Park Creative Centre’s and Graceview Presbyterian Church’s memberships, their local residents and users of their spaces. This year, we welcome our newest partner, Fellowship Church and its congregation. We invite the community to join us at these fun and pressure-free sessions – all are welcome!

The program begins with ten sessions this fall on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. from October 16 until December 18. In 2024, ten additional workshops are scheduled beginning January 16 through March 13. Sessions are held in-person, with the option to livestream to individuals that are unable to join us in-person. The program will be held on a rotating basis between the three venues.

Registration is required, please click here to enroll, or call us at 416-622-5294.

Led by our team of professional and emerging music instructors, each session in this weekly singing series will include a structured offering of vocal-warmups and a collective exploration of new and familiar music curated for each session. An informal social reception will follow each singing session, with refreshments provided by the organizers, and with a few gently themed activities to promote and enhance social cohesion. The programming provides continuity and comfort for those involved, and the joyful experience of freely singing, regardless of vocal range or expertise.

There will be no audition process, but rather an open acceptance policy. Stronger singers will be encouraged to take on additional roles such as singing harmony parts, though this is by no means required and is entirely subject to comfort levels. Those seeking to join will not be asked to commit to the whole series but rather to “drop in” as they are able.

Singing is a joyful activity and through the friendly exercise of using their lungs and voices together, it can provide a strong sense of physical community. All three venues have reliable climate control and environmental standards so that participants will feel safe and comfortable in these spaces.

The project will contribute to enhancing the social well-being of senior’s and their community’s vitality as well as empowering seniors by fostering a sharing of knowledge, skills and expertise through an arts-based practice.

Group sessions will occur at Neilson Park Creative Centre, 56 Neilson Drive, Etobicoke; Graceview Presbyterian Church, 588 Renforth Drive, Etobicoke and Fellowship Christian Reformed Church, 800 Burnhamthorpe Road, Etobicoke.
