Sessions: 1 Sunday
Instructor: Yih Lerh Huang
Level: All Levels
This one-day workshop will introduce participants to Chinese calligraphy, from the beginnings of the written language, millennia ago, to its present-day derivations. Students will learn about the rudiments of Chinese ‘words’: How the logographic language is different from alphabetic languages, how the words (ideograms) are composed, and the different scripts and styles. Basic brush strokes will be demonstrated. Participants will practice with the brushes provided for use during the class. Your guide in this cultural romp is Yih Lerh Huang, whose passion for calligraphy began when, as a teenager, he was recruited to grind ink for his fatherÂ’s brush practices. His art journey was interrupted by studies and professional pursuits, a PhD in Cognitive Psychology, and a career in technology innovation. In retirement, he has rekindled his zeal for Chinese calligraphy. A kit will be available for purchase from the instructor at the start of the session for $25, no tax, cash accepted. Kit includes: Chinese calligraphy brush, 10 sheets of traditional calligraphy paper, and a 100ml bottle of ink.
